"APLF will open its doors next Wednesday. I hope many of the African tanners and leather goods manufacturers have considered my advice and decided to attend. I wish whoever did, a truckload of success." - Encouragement from leather commentator Sam Setter

Retailing

'There's no point brooding'

Rustenburg, N.W. Province, SA – Yusuf Carrim, managing member of 3-store men's outfitting Yankees Stores cc, which trades as American Junior, Figo's and Casa Blanca, said when measured month-to-month and year-to-year, there wasn't real growth, and retailers had to weather this period. However, "we can meet our commitments and there's no point being negative and brooding".
"This is a mining town, and trade is dependent on how well the mines are doing."
He said the business was adapting to changing demand. "The pansula market is shrinking, and we're adding new product to attract younger consumers."
He singled out Italian brand Rossimoda, distributed by Sole Agents Distribution, for innovative product and tight distribution "which has made us a destination store for that brand".
He said online sales were also helping.

'Less than sanguine' about trade

Martin Cohen, proprietor, L. Cohen Outfitter
Cape Town, W. Cape, SA – This past week has been exceptionally quiet.
Friday and Saturday' s trade has been fair. A few bigger sales enhanced the sales figures.
I am not sanguine about business at the moment. Too many negatives nationally.

Glen's Shoes closes, Glen's Shoes & More opens

East London, E. Cape, SA – Family footwear retailer Puttergill's Shoes cc, t/a Glen's Shoes, closed at the end of February and member Glen Puttergill, who will be 78 in May, has retired.
His long-time manageress, Angelique Capels, has opened a new business, Glen's Shoes & More, in Chamberlain Rd, Berea. The previous business was in the CBD.
