KZN storm damage to factories and croc farm

Durban, KZN, SA – At least 6 leather- and footwear-related businesses in the Durban area were directly affected by last week's flood.
Perhaps hardest hit was Michelle Footwear in Seaview, which borders the normally placid Umhlatuzana River. It has posted a 12 minute video of the devastation on its Froggie Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/froggieshoes/ - to tell its online customers that it would not be able to deliver until it had been able to clear up. Director Warren Gedye couldn't be reached this morning.
The 3 footwear factories and the unit maker in Isipingo - Angel Footwear/Reunion Components, Caprini Footwear and Palm Footwear - had varying degrees of damage. Isipingo has a history of flooding.
Palm was "severely impacted", wrote Rajeev Pattundeen. "Water levels reached 1.1 m in parts of our plant. However, we have an incredible team of shoemakers that worked post the event into Easter weekend to ensure we start up as soon as possible. Power, water and most importantly our family here at Palm who face individual hardships at their homes resulting from the devastating floods, will present difficulties getting up to 100% capacity immediately. We do, however, remain confident that with our experience in disaster management, we will deliver to all our customers' expectations. Thankfully it’s not peak back-to-school."
He said Palm was still "collating damages", and couldn't put a figure to the cost, most of which would not be covered by insurance. "Since the October 2017 event, insurance companies are very cautious with cover in the Isipingo area; we have very limited cover with burdensome caveats."
He said Palm's priority was "to get our people back to work".
"We are grateful to our amazing Palm Family and industry friends who so unconditionally offered us support in these trying times. Mndeni Munye - One Family - that's our credo here."
Angel Footwear/Reunion Components had not responded by yesterday, but the component factory, which is on a lower level than the footwear factory, was worse affected.
Of all of them, Caprini was least affected. On Thursday, MD Sanjay Pattundeen wrote: "On Tuesday, factory closed. No access. On Wednesday, after some very delayed traffic, accessed factory. Fortunately no damage. However only 50% of staff returned. Thursday, back to normal."
Peter Watson of the family-owned Crocodile Creek farm, which is near Ballito on the north side of Durban, said media reports of escapes from the farm - including a photo of an adult crocodile on the beach - had been "exaggerated", but that the farm had "lots of damage to infrastructure".
SA Crocodile Industry Association Manco member Stefan van As wrote: "Peter confirmed that his facilities were damaged and his first priority is to safeguard his crocodiles to prevent further escapes. When done he will retrieve and recapture escaped crocs. I understand that he has notified the local Nature Conservation officer in his area and they will be assisting him."
He also contacted other crocodile farmers in the area, requesting them to assist Crocodile Creek.
In addition, JSE-listed retailer Pepkor said in a SENS release that its KZN distribution centre, also in Isipingo, had "sustained significant damage", and that distribution had been affected. However, it said stores would be replenished "in the short term" from its other distribution centres, in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
Shotland's Packaging national sales manager Wendy Burger probably spoke for most of the industry when she wrote yesterday: "We have been very fortunate and have suffered no direct damage from the floods. Unfortunately, with the flood and damaged roads, we had to close our factory from Tuesday and will reopen tomorrow. So, loss of business is not good – but in the bigger picture, with loss of lives and property – we cannot complain."

Mr Price buys Studio 88

Durban, KZN, SA (13 April 2022) – Mr Price Group Ltd announced last Wednesday that it has acquired 70% of Blue Falcon Trading (Pty) Ltd, which owns the Studio 88 group of businesses, for R3.3 billion.
It acquired the entire share of RMB Ventures Six (Pty) Ltd, and 50% of the shares of the 7 Studio 88 management who are also shareholders. Mr Price will acquire the balance of their shares over 4 years.
Mr Price said the purchase price, which "represents approximately 6% of Mr Price's market capitalisation", would be "fully funded through existing cash resources".
The report said Studio 88 generated R5.6 billion revenue through over 700 stores for the year to 30 September 2021, and that it was the "largest independent retailer of branded leisure, lifestyle and sporting apparel and footwear in SA".
Explaining the acquisition, the release said: "In May 2021, Mr Price communicated a new long-term strategy, with the vision of becoming the most valuable retailer in Africa. This strategy was informed by extensive strategic research of the SA retail sector, which identified clear opportunities for growth, both organic and acquisitive. The aspirational value segment within the apparel sector was highlighted as an attractive investment area in which the group is currently under-represented...The inclusion of the Studio 88 Group would increase Mr Price's annual revenue to over R28 billion and would prospectively become the group's second largest of 9 trading divisions. Mr Price's store footprint would increase to more than 2 400 stores and the group would employ over 25 000 people."
According to the release, "the group is currently the highest ranked apparel and homeware retailer in the FTSE JSE Top 40 Index".
