Universal: Debt 'around R141m'

Cape Town, W. Cape, SA – Universal Footwear & Trading, which went into voluntary liquidation on 03 March, has liabilities of around R141m, "and very little money", liquidator Chris van Zyl of Progressive Administration said on Friday.
Already, he said for lack of funds the liquidators had abandoned 6 containers in Cape Town harbour to the shippers - 2 of components for Universal's factory, 4 of finished shoes.
He said at the first meeting of creditors, held on Friday, 63 creditors had submitted claims and proof, and had nominated him as the liquidator.
He said the factory has been re-opened to convert components into finished goods, supplying chain retailers who had been waiting for stock from Universal, and some others who had approached the liquidator to buy.
He said the factory had so far completed and delivered footwear worth R1m, and was busy with footwear worth another R274 000. He expected further orders worth R400 000-R500 000.
"The components would have been worth very little," he said. "It's much better to convert them into finished goods."

Flood damage: DTIC issues update

Pretoria, Gauteng, SA – The Department of Trade, Industry & Competition (DTIC), on Wednesday circulated an email offering support via the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) to businesses affected by the flooding on 11 and 12 April in KZN. It also gave a list of the worst affected businesses.
Aside from Michelle Footwear, Angel Footwear/Reunion Components and Palm Footwear, which we reported on last week, the DTIC said 'Foot Focus' - actually The World Focus Group's Foot Style factory in Old North Coast/Chris Hani Rd, Briardene, Durban - was "badly flooded. Machinery under water, office under water. All fabrics for May and June are beyond recovery." TWFG director Shiraz Jeewa confirmed this.
In Clairwood, Durban, trims and buckles manufacturer Topline Manufacturers was "completely flooded", and Twinkle Shoes was "flooded".
In Pinetown, Neptun Boot said its clog department had been flooded.

Global regulatory updates for restricted substances in softlines products webinar

Geneva, Switzerland – Testing, inspection and certification company SGS will host a complimentary webinar, ‘Global Regulatory Updates for Restricted Substances in Softlines Products’, on Friday, 19 May.
For apparel and footwear businesses, where good chemical management practices are key to commercial success as well as regulatory compliance, it can be difficult to grasp the complexities of the global legislative landscape. When failure to do so can negatively impact trade quickly and seriously, a better understanding of current and proposed fiscal changes can help to avoid or mitigate such issues.
SGS’s Global Technical Manager, Frank Kempe, and Technical Director, Min Zhu, are softlines experts who will provide a thorough and clear exploration of the latest updates, their impacts and obligations, and show how SGS’s testing approach can help to manage risk and add value to sustainable chemical management for businesses of all sizes.
     Register for the webinar
Session 1 – 4pm Shanghai, China (GMT =7:00), 9am London (GMT +1:00)
Session 2 – 3pm London (GMT +1:00), 10am New York (GMT -5:00)

They Said It

"God was on our side this time. A water dam build-up stopped 50 metres from our warehouse here in Peter Rd." - Garth Ribbink, member, A. Greenaways (Natal), Durban, KZN, SA, on the floods which hit the province 2 weeks ago. The company was one of the worst affected in the riots and looting last July when its premises and stock were torched.
